OnlyFans vs. JustForFans: The Gay Creator’s Dilemma

By 2026, the line between an Instagram thirst trap and a subscription service has practically dissolved. If you look at a hot guy on your feed and immediately think, “I wonder if he has a wet noodle video on his profile,” you are participating in the great and terrible equalizer of gay digital culture. We have officially transitioned from the era of the “fitness influencer” to the era of the “subscription-based personality,” where the value of a man’s aesthetic is measured not by his likes, but by his monthly recurring revenue.

In this brave new world, the throne room of adult content is split between two distinct powers. On one side, you have OnlyFans, the ubiquitous, corporate titan that tried to scrub adult content back in 2021 to appease venture capital and banks, only to realize that sex work built its house. On the other, you have JustForFans (JFF), founded by adult industry veteran Dominic Ford. It’s explicitly pro-sex worker, built by the industry for the industry, and carries a deep, unapologetic weight in the gay ecosystem.

Let’s talk about the cultural posture. OnlyFans is the “household name.” It’s the default setting. It’s the mall of America of adult content—shiny, heavily sanitized, and open to everyone. When a new crop of gym rats or model-types enters the game, they flock to OF because “everyone is already there.” It’s the path of least resistance, the digital equivalent of going to the Apple Store instead of building a custom PC. Because it’s so saturated, OF has become a prestige signal. Having a blue checkmark there is the modern equivalent of having a membership to the gym you never actually use.

But the corporate anxiety that plagued OF in its early years still haunts it. The platform is obsessed with banks and insurance companies, which means payment processors sometimes flag content for being too “risky.” You have creators walking on eggshells, terrified that a photo of a nipple might get them demonetized. It is the ultimate paradox of the influencer-ization of sex work: you trade freedom for reach.

Enter JustForFans. Founded by Ford, a powerhouse in the gay adult world, JFF is the reliable sanctuary. It’s less mall, more private club. It lacks the mainstream polish of its competitor, sure, but it trades that gloss for unapologetic creator sovereignty. JFF understands that for a gay man, authenticity isn’t about being Instagram-perfect; it’s about being exactly who you are in the bedroom. Ford’s platform offers feature-rich tools for creators that OF can’t match—physical merch stores, multiple sub tiers, and customizable features that allow for a deeper, more granular connection with fans.

The tension here is palpable. We’re seeing the classic transition from legacy gay porn studios to individual creator monetization, but the landscape is fractured. General consumer behavior on OF is driven by “everyone is already there”—the FOMO factor. But a savvy gay man looking for specific content, or a creator tired of being flagged by payment processors, will migrate to JFF. It’s where you go to find the content that OF’s algorithms hide or ban, and it’s where you go to support a creator who actually owns their labor.

The tactical breakdown is simple: OF takes a standard 20% cut, but that comes with the cost of navigating corporate gatekeepers. JFF offers a better deal for the worker, prioritizing the creator’s bottom line. User experience on JFF feels less like scrolling through a social feed and more like a curated library of desire. Discoverability is the trade-off; on OF, you are discovered by the algorithm; on JFF, you have to build a community, which, frankly, is how it should be.

The verdict comes down to what a creator or fan values more: clout or stability. If you want to be the next big influencer, if you want your face on billboards and viral tweets, you go to OnlyFans. You want the clout, you want the algorithm to do the work, and you accept the corporate leash.

But if you want to be a professional in the queer economy, if you want to sell merch, build a brand, and keep your content uncensored, you go to JustForFans. You work for yourself, not the algorithm.
