Submission Wrestling: Nicky vs. Miguel | GRPL

Nicky vs Miguel is one of the most unique GRPL Submission Wrestling matches of the year: brother vs brother, bodybuilder vs bodybuilder, and Judo black belt vs Judo black belt on the tatami of their old club, Lu Gia Jen in Den Haag.

This is a brother vs brother wrestling match with real personal pride behind it. Both fighters built their foundation in Judo, but it has been a long time since either brother seriously stepped back onto the mat. Today, their focus is almost entirely on fitness, bodybuilding, and strength training. That makes this GRPL match different from a regular grappling contest: old Judo instincts, new strength, and the pressure of not wanting to lose to your own brother.

Nicky already has one GRPL match behind him. One year ago, he faced Tom and came up short. Now he returns with a completely different kind of challenge in front of him: his own brother. Miguel steps into GRPL for the first time, but as a Judo black belt and a powerful athlete, he is not entering as someone without a combat sports foundation.

The rules are simple, but unforgiving. This is GRPL Submission Wrestling under choke-only rules. Each round lasts a maximum of 7 minutes. A successful choke scores 1 point and immediately ends the round. The match is fought as a best-of-three format, meaning the first fighter to score 2 points wins the match.

That structure creates real pressure from the first exchange. One clean choke can steal a round. One mistake around the neck can shift the entire match. There are no points for throws, pins, control, or looking stronger. Even in a matchup between two powerful bodybuilders and Judo black belts, the only thing that matters on the scoreboard is finishing the choke.

What makes this match even more special is the setting. Nicky and Miguel return to the tatami of their old Judo club, bringing their current strength-focused lifestyles back into the environment where their martial arts journey began. It is a full-circle moment: two brothers, two black belts, one old dojo, and one GRPL match to settle who can still dominate on the mat.

Both fighters are also wearing the newest GRPL custom Vale Tudo Shorts, making this matchup a first look at new GRPL fightwear in one of the most personal matches we have filmed.

Can Nicky use his previous GRPL experience to take control, or will Miguel make a statement in his debut by proving that he is the stronger brother on the tatami?

Let us know in the comments: in a brother vs brother match between two Judo black belts and bodybuilders, what matters more — strength, technique, or the ability to stay calm under pressure?
